TO CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING ITEMS OF BUSINESS WE WILL HAVE.

THE INVOCATION AND THEN THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE US AND THE TEXAS FLAG.

THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO ADDRESS THE BOARD REGARDING ANY TOPIC.

. OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, WE THANK YOU FOR THESE PEOPLE WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR TIME TO VOLUNTEER FOR THIS LIBRARY BOARD MEETING.

AT THIS TIME, WE'LL RECEIVE AND DISCUSS THE LIBRARY MANAGER'S MONTHLY REPORT.

IN YOUR PACKET THIS EVENING, YOU WILL FIND THE MONTHLY REPORT FOR MAY 2023.

EXCELLENT MONTH.

BY ALL ACCOUNTS FOR THE LIBRARY, WE HAD A VERY LARGE NUMBER OF ITEMS ADDED LARGE NUMBER OF PATRONS COMING IN THE BUILDING, HIGHER CHECKOUTS THAN LAST YEAR BY A GOOD MARGIN.

MORE PEOPLE USING A TON OF OUR SERVICES LIKE OUR COMPUTERS, OUR LITERACY COMPUTERS, 3D PRINTING.

WE ONCE AGAIN HAD AN ENORMOUS REQUEST COME IN.

SO NO SURPRISE THERE WAS A LOT AND WE DID HAVE FEWER PROGRAMS IN THE MONTH OF MAY THAN WE TYPICALLY HAVE IN A MONTH, ALTHOUGH IT WAS ABOUT THE SAME AS WE DID LAST YEAR. AND THAT IS BECAUSE AS WE GEAR UP INTO SUMMER READING, OUR STAFF DO TAKE A LOT OF THAT TIME TO PREP FOR OUR SUMMER READING EVENTS.

AND SO TYPICALLY IN THE MONTH OF MAY WE HAVE JUST A FEW AND THAT'S WHAT YOU SEE HERE.

BUT THAT'S ALSO THE SAME AS IT WAS LAST MAY.

WE HAVE STARTED OUR SUMMER READING PROGRAM, BY THE WAY, WE HAD OUR KICKOFF PARTY ON SATURDAY, JUNE 3RD.

WE HAD 651 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE.

SO THAT WAS A GREAT TURNOUT FOR THAT.

WE HAD SOME NEAT ATTRACTIONS LIKE A PETTING ZOO, INFLATABLES, OUTDOOR GAMES.

AND FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR, A BUBBLE FOAM PARTY WHICH WAS PROVIDED BY A LOCAL RESIDENT THAT HAS A TRUCK THAT SHE BRINGS OUT AND SPRAYS THE FOAM ALL OVER THE KIDS. AND IT WAS A BLAST.

IT'S REALLY ENJOYED. IT CAME OUT IN THEIR SWIMSUIT WITH THEIR GOGGLES AND AND JUST REALLY ENJOYED THAT.

SO GREAT RESPONSE TO THAT EVENT.

AND THEN SINCE THEN WE HAD OUR FIRST WEEK OF SUMMER READING LAST WEEK AND WE'VE HAD A LOT OF ATTENDANCE AT OUR EVENTS, INCLUDING 53 PEOPLE AT OUR CRAFT LAST MONDAY, 60 SEVEN AT OUR CRAFT TODAY.

AND THEN JUST ALL OF OUR EVENTS JUST VERY, VERY WELL ATTENDED SO FAR.

LET'S SEE, BEYOND THAT, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD REGARDING THE MONTHLY REPORT? CAN YOU. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE KICKOFF.

[6. Discuss and consider approval of a new Long-Range Plan for the Library.]

THE LIBRARY. THANK YOU, JOHN.

BOARD MEMBERS, FOR THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS, I HAVE BEEN BRINGING NEW DRAFTS OF PORTIONS OF THE LONG RANGE PLAN FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND DISCUSSION.

A BIT OF BACKGROUND ON THIS.

THE LIBRARY IS REQUIRED TO HAVE A LONG RANGE PLAN APPROVED BY THE BOARD EVERY FIVE YEARS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN OUR ACCREDITATION BY THE TEXAS STATE LIBRARY.

OUR LONG RANGE PLAN ACTUALLY DID.

RUN OUT LAST YEAR, BUT WE GOT SPECIAL APPROVAL DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CITY WAS PERFORMING THE THE CITYWIDE SURVEY BY POLCO LAST YEAR.

I WANTED TO INCLUDE THAT DATA IN OUR NEW LONG RANGE PLAN BECAUSE IT WOULD BE VERY VALUABLE DATA AND WE GOT PERMISSION FROM THE STATE TO EXTEND THAT OUT ANOTHER YEAR. AND SO THIS LONG RANGE PLAN WOULD BE GOING FORWARD FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, THE CURRENT YEAR TO FIVE YEARS.

THE NARRATIVE PORTION THAT YOU FIND AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PLAN IS UNCHANGED FROM THE PREVIOUS DRAFTS.

LAST MONTH I PRESENTED THE SIX GOALS THAT ARE IN THE BACK HALF OF THE LONG RANGE PLAN AND WE HAVE ADDED SOME. I GUESS YOU WOULD CALL THEM JUST GOALS, THE SMART GOALS.

WE KIND OF DISCUSSED SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE, REALISTIC AND TIME BASED GOALS FOR A LOT OF THESE.

FOR INSTANCE, THE FIRST ITEM THERE ABOUT CHILDREN'S PROGRAMING, WE WOULD ENCOURAGE LITERACY, CURIOSITY AND READING AMONGST THE YOUNGEST READERS IN THE COMMUNITY.

AND THE GOAL THERE IS TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN THE 1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM BY 10% ANNUALLY.

SO THAT WOULD BE A METHOD OF ACCOMPLISHING THAT BY MEETING THAT METRIC.

AND SO YOU WILL SEE THROUGHOUT THE DOCUMENT NOT EVERY BULLET POINT HAS A METRIC LISTED, BUT MANY OF THEM DO.

AND SO I WOULD LIKE TO JUST GO THROUGH A FEW OF THOSE FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.

AND THEN IF THERE ARE ANY ITEMS HERE THAT YOU WOULD THAT THE BOARD WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS OR CHANGE OR ADD, IF THERE'S A METRIC THAT YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN ADDING TO THIS, WE WOULD CERTAINLY BE WILLING TO DO THAT.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAVE BROUGHT YOU A DRAFT THAT I BELIEVE COULD BE VOTED ON AND APPROVED BY THE BOARD.

YOU CERTAINLY HAVE THE OPTION TO APPROVE THE LONG RANGE PLAN AS IT'S PRESENTED THIS EVENING.

THAT WOULD TAKE A MOTION AND A VOTE, BUT WE DON'T HAVE TO APPROVE IT TONIGHT.

IT CAN BE CONSIDERED AGAIN NEXT MONTH AND WE WOULD OF COURSE APPRECIATE ANY FEEDBACK, ANY ADDITIONS THAT WE'D LIKE TO MAKE TO THE PLAN IN ORDER TO MAKE IT A FINAL DRAFT FOR NEXT MONTH.

BUT WE DO HAVE AGAIN, HAVE THE OPTION FOR TONIGHT.

SO THE FIRST BULLET POINT I MENTIONED THERE, THE METRIC IS TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN THE 1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM BY 10% ANNUALLY.

NEXT, BULLET POINT TO PROVIDE PROGRAMING FOR CHILDREN OF ALL DEVELOPMENTAL LEVELS AND ABILITIES THAT FOCUSES ON TEACHING LITERACY SKILLS AND PRE LITERACY SKILLS.

AND THE METRICS FOR THOSE ARE INCREASING PARTICIPATION IN STORY TIMES AND OTHER EARLY LITERACY PROGRAMS BY 5% ANNUALLY, WITH THE GOAL OF REACHING AN AVERAGE ATTENDANCE OF 50 PEOPLE FOR ALL STORY TIMES.

EXCLUDING BABY BOUNCE STORY TIMES, WHICH ARE TYPICALLY MUCH SMALLER.

ATTENDANCE ACTUALLY HELPS IF THEY'RE NOT 50 PEOPLE FOR A BABY STORY TIME MUCH BETTER IN THAT REGARD.

BUT FOR OUR PRESCHOOL TODDLER STORY TIME AND THEN OUR FAMILY STORY TIME, WHICH WE AGAIN HOPE TO IMPLEMENT IN THE FALL, IF WE CAN ARE ABLE TO EXTEND OUR HOURS INTO THE EVENING, MORE NIGHTS PER WEEK, WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE AN AVERAGE ATTENDANCE OF 50 PEOPLE.

AT THOSE 50 PEOPLE IS A MANAGEABLE NUMBER OF ATTENDEES FOR THESE STORY TIMES.

MORE THAN THAT, AND IT STARTS TO GET A LITTLE HAIRY.

BUT IF WE CAN CONSISTENTLY HAVE 50 PEOPLE EACH STORY TIME, THAT IS A THAT IS WHERE WE WANT TO BE.

IT'S ABOUT WHAT WE CAN HANDLE IN OUR IN OUR MEETING ROOM.

WE WANT TO COLLABORATE WITH PARENTS, SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO DEVELOP NEW AND INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN, INCLUDING AND THESE ARE THE METRICS INCREASING OUTREACH ACTIVITIES AND SCHOOL VISITS TO AN AVERAGE OF TWO PER MONTH BY FISCAL YEAR 2028.

AND THIS WOULD AGAIN TAKE SOME MORE STAFF MEMBERS THAT WE COULD SEND TO SCHOOLS TO DO STORY TIMES IN SCHOOLS AND DAYCARE CENTERS AND TO PARTICIPATE IN MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT AND THINGS LIKE THAT AND THOSE TYPES OF THOSE TYPES OF EVENTS.

AND WE USED TO DO A LOT MORE OF THESE BEFORE COVID SORT OF CHANGED EVERYTHING IN REGARDS TO OUTREACH EVENTS.

BUT WE ARE GETTING BACK INTO THEM.

OUR SCHOOLS ARE INVITING US BACK OUT TO COME AND DO THESE AGAIN, AND WE WOULD REALLY LOVE TO CONTINUE TO INCREASE THAT AGAIN, TO HAVE 24 PER YEAR, AN AVERAGE OF TWO PER MONTH.

WE WOULD ALSO COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL HOMESCHOOL GROUPS TO IDENTIFY OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROGRAMING FOR HOMESCHOOL FAMILIES SPECIFICALLY AND IMPLEMENT A BIWEEKLY HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM BY FISCAL YEAR 2025.

NEXT ITEM TO ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION IN THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM AND INCREASE CHILDREN'S ENGAGEMENT WITH THE LIBRARY AND LIBRARY RESOURCES.

AND THE METRIC FOR THAT IS TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM BY CHILDREN AGES 0 TO 12 BY 5% ANNUALLY.

SO THAT'S A BIG CHUNK. THAT FIRST CHUNK UNDER CHILDREN'S PROGRAMING.

AND I FIGURE MAYBE WE STOP THERE AND SEE IF THERE'S ANY COMMENTS OR ANY DISCUSSION FROM THE BOARD ON ON THAT FIRST SECTION.

ANYBODY HAVE ANYTHING? COMMENT. YES.

ARE THEY AVAILABLE VIRTUALLY? THEY ARE NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE VIRTUALLY, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE JUST SORT OF ADDED OUR MEETING ROOM RENOVATIONS THAT ARE FINISHING UP.

THEY'RE SORT OF IN THE LAST STAGES OF GETTING THE TELECONFERENCING AND HYBRID MEETING STUFF SET UP.

THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BE SOMETHING WE COULD ADD.

IT ADDS A LITTLE BIT MORE.

WE'RE DOING. BUT I THINK IF THERE'S A DEMAND FOR IT, THAT COULD BE SOMETHING THAT WE COULD ADD.

YEAH. WILL IT COUNT TOWARDS YOUR NUMBERS? I WOULD COUNT IT TOWARDS OUR NUMBERS EVEN WHEN WE DID VIRTUAL STORY TIMES.

SO WE HAD AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE PANDEMIC, WE HAD A GOOD NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT WOULD TUNE IN TO OUR VIRTUAL STORY TIMES.

THAT QUICKLY WANED.

I THINK IT WAS SORT OF A.

ANOTHER SCREEN ACTIVITY FOR KIDS.

IT WAS SORT OF ENDED UP BEING LIKE SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

SO I THINK THAT THERE ARE FAMILIES THAT WOULD ENJOY THAT HAVING THAT OPTION.

BUT FOR MOST FAMILIES, THE IN-PERSON STORY TIME WOULD PROBABLY BE THE PREFERENCE.

SO IT'S SOMETHING WE COULD TRY AND SEE IF THERE'S AN INTEREST FOR CERTAIN.

PARENTS IS GOING TO BE AN INCREASED DEMOGRAPHIC IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.

AND ACTUALLY OUR GARDEN CLUB HERE IN SACHSE THAT RENTS OUT OUR MEETING ROOM IS VERY INTERESTED IN HAVING THIS BECAUSE A LOT OF THEIR MEMBERS ARE STILL WOULD PREFER TO TUNE IN VIRTUALLY AS WELL.

SO THE ABILITY TO HAVE THESE HYBRID MEETINGS WILL BE THERE AND TO USE THAT FOR A STORY TIME.

IT'S VERY POSSIBLE. YEAH, WE JUST HAVE TO GET ALL THE PIECES IN PLACE, WHICH IS, IT'S COMING TOGETHER.

IT'S MOSTLY THERE. IN FACT, THE VENDORS COMING OUT TOMORROW AND SEE IF WE CAN GET IT TO WORK.

SO I THINK THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY WITHIN WILEY ISD AND ALSO GISD AS A LOT OF PTAS DO, SUPPORT THE PROGRAMS FOR ARTS AND EDUCATION AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE.

ALSO GETTING WITH THE DISTRICTS REGARDING THEIR LITERACY NIGHTS BECAUSE LITERACY NIGHT THROUGHOUT ALL OF GISD BECAUSE I'M MORE FAMILIAR WITH GISD IS VERY IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY AT GRADE SCHOOL LEVEL.

BUT I DON'T BELIEVE THAT IT SHOULD STOP FROM THERE.

WE SHOULD CONTINUE THOSE LITERACY NIGHTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ALSO HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL.

YEAH, ABSOLUTELY.

AND THOSE WERE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE PRIOR TO COVID WERE VERY INVOLVED IN.

A LOT OF THE SCHOOLS GOING TO THEIR LITERACY NIGHTS AND MEET THE TEACHER NIGHTS AND THINGS.

JUST THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR, WE WERE ABLE TO GET BACK INTO SOME OF THE SCHOOLS TO DO THE LITERACY NIGHTS AND THINGS AGAIN.

OKAY, GREAT. AND WE DID A COUPLE OF THEM AT THE END OF THE YEAR FOR SOME OF THE LOCAL SCHOOLS REACHED OUT TO TO THE OTHERS.

AND WE HOPE TO GET BACK INTO A LOT OF THOSE IN THE NEXT YEAR OR SO.

AND THAT FALLS UNDER SORT OF THE OUTREACH ACTIVITY.

BULLET POINT UNDER THERE, THE THE HOMESCHOOL GROUP ITEM UNDER THERE IS SOMETHING THAT WE'RE NOT CURRENTLY DOING AND IT WOULD BE A BRAND NEW THING FOR US TO TRY TO IMPLEMENT THAT. THAT WOULD BE AN AMAZING ASSET FOR A LOT OF HOMESCHOOL FAMILIES WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.

YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PARENTS WERE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT SENDING THEIR KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL FOR MULTIPLE REASONS.

AND SO FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THIS AND HAVE IT UTILIZED WOULD BE AMAZING FOR THE CITY OF SACHSE.

AND REALLY, SINCE WE'VE SINCE THE PANDEMIC HAS REALLY BROUGHT A LOT OF KIDS INTO THE HOMESCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AND WE'VE HAD A LOT MORE FAMILIES COME TO US AND EXPRESS A DESIRE FOR THOSE TYPES OF PROGRAMS AS WELL.

ESPECIALLY OVER THE PAST YEAR, WE'VE SEEN A LOT OF INTEREST IN THAT.

SO PERFECT. IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY TO TO BRING THAT CROWD INTO THE LIBRARY AND PROVIDE SOME SERVICES FOR THEM AT TIMES THAT ARE CONVENIENT FOR THOSE FAMILIES.

YEAH. ALL RIGHT.

ANY OTHER COMMENT? OKAY.

THE NEXT SECTION IS ABOUT TEEN PROGRAMING AND THE PROGRAMING SECTION IS THE LONGEST ONE.

THAT'S WHY WE'RE SORT OF TAKING IT IN CHUNKS LIKE THIS.

SO THE NEXT METRIC THERE IS UNDER THE SECOND BULLET POINT TO PROVIDE ENGAGING PROGRAMS FOR TEENS THAT INCORPORATE STEM GAMING, CRAFTS AND OTHER TOOLS FOR HANDS ON LEARNING.

AND THE METRIC WOULD BE TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE AT PROGRAMS FOR TEENS BY 5% ANNUALLY AND TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TEEN PROGRAMS TO AN AVERAGE OF ONE TEEN PROGRAM PER WEEK BY FISCAL YEAR 2025.

I HAVE MENTIONED THIS A COUPLE OF TIMES TO THE BOARD.

TEENS ARE HARD TO REACH IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES.

THEY ARE OUR MOST DIFFICULT DEMOGRAPHIC TO CONSISTENTLY BRING IN BECAUSE WHEN KIDS ARE KIDS, PARENTS ARE BRINGING THEM INTO THE LIBRARY FOR SUMMER READING AND FOR STORY TIMES. IT'S CHALLENGING, BUT THERE IS MORE OF AN EFFORT IN LIBRARIES OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF DECADES TO MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH THOSE TEENS, TO MAKE THEM REALLY A DEMOGRAPHIC THAT WE REACH OUT TO SPECIFICALLY.

AND SO BY PROVIDING ACTIVITIES FOR TEENS THEMSELVES, SPECIFICALLY, NOT JUST LIKE A KID'S ACTIVITY, THEY CAN COME WITH THEIR BROTHER OR SISTER.

WE HOPE TO MAINTAIN AND SORT OF, I SHOULD SAY, RETAIN THOSE TEENS IN THE LIBRARY.

AND SO THAT'S WHY NOT ONLY INCREASING THE NUMBER OF PROGRAMS FOR TEENS TO AN AVERAGE OF ONE PROGRAM PER WEEK, WHICH DOESN'T SOUND LIKE A WHOLE LOT, BUT WE MAYBE HAVE ONE EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS OR A MONTH AT THIS POINT.

SO IT WOULD BE A BIG, BIG INCREASE AND INCREASING OUR HOURS WOULD GO A LONG WAY TOWARDS DOING THIS AS WELL BECAUSE WE COULD HAVE A CONSISTENT NIGHT EACH WEEK TO DO THAT PROGRAM.

ARE THERE PARTICULAR ONES THAT STAND OUT AS MORE POPULAR THAT YOU COULD CONTINUE DOING AND STEM PROGRAMS? HANDS ON ACTIVITIES? WE HAVE DONE SOME.

WE ACTUALLY RECEIVED SOME GRANT FUNDING A YEAR AGO OR SO TO PURCHASE SOME STEM.

AND THE WORD I'M LOOKING FOR IS ESCAPING ME, BUT REALLY HANDS ON ACTIVITIES FOR THE TEENS TO PARTICIPATE IN.

AND IT BROUGHT IN A REALLY BIG CROWD, PROBABLY THE BIGGEST CROWD WE'VE EVER HAD OF TEENS, ABOUT 30 TEENS, I THINK, AT ONE EVENT, WHICH IS A BIG NUMBER.

AND THEN THE ONE THAT REALLY GOT THEM IN WAS WE MADE WAS LIKE COOKING IN A MUG.

AND THEY MADE MUG MEALS WITH LIKE CHOCOLATE CAKE AND OR PIZZA IN A MUG.

AND THEY REALLY ENJOYED THAT BECAUSE IT'S FOOD AND BUT THOSE SORTS OF THINGS, HANDS ON ACTIVITIES THAT ARE MORE GROWN UP THAN LIKE A KIDS LIKE A STORY TIME WOULD BE OR LIKE A PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MIDDLE GRADE.

THEY ENJOY THAT KIND OF STUFF.

THOSE ARE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ONES THAT WE'VE HAD, AND WE HOPE TO CONTINUE THOSE STEM PROGRAMS FOR SURE.

THE STAMP PROGRAM, PLUS THE FRIENDLY STAFF AND OTHER PROGRAMS. AND KEEPING THE COLLECTION UP TO DATE.

WAS THAT ONE OF THE REASONS THAT THE SACHSE PUBLIC LIBRARY RECEIVED THE LIBRARIES AND EXCELLENCE AWARD? YES, ACTUALLY.

YOU KNOW, I MEAN, IT'S GOOD THAT THEY GET, YOU KNOW, SOME OF IT DONE, BUT TO DO ALL 12 MONTHS, ALL 12 GENRES IS A CHALLENGE BECAUSE ADULTS ARE BUSY, KIDS ARE BUSY BUT LIKE WE WORK GUYS SO LIKE IT HAS HELPED THOUGH BRING ATTENTION TO A LOT OF DIFFERENT GENRES FOR ADULTS.

WE TEND TO READ WHAT WE LIKE, YOU KNOW, AND BRANCHING OUT TO NEW AUTHORS AND NEW GENRES, EVEN KNOWING WHAT WHAT IF I WANTED TO BRANCH OUT? WHAT WOULD I EVEN WANT TO PICK?
